Chapter 1299: The Emperor Has Good News 13
For the rest of the afternoon, Su Yan stayed in his bedchamber shelling walnuts.
He wouldn’t let her leave, insisting she sit nearby and shell.
And she wasn’t allowed to make any noise that might disturb his sleep.
Which made the walnut‑shelling progress painfully slow.
By the time he woke up, she had only managed to fill a small basin.
Though it was worth noting that her walnut‑shelling skills had improved quite a bit.
Once he finished his nap, he went to the pavilion in the back garden to bask in the sun.
Su Yan carried her basin of walnuts and kept shelling.
Finally, after two hours, she finished shelling that entire basin.
There was still another basin, which she had left in the bedchamber for the time being.
So she planned to go back and get it.
The Prince Mansion was heavily guarded, the atmosphere stern.
It was rare to hear anyone talking loudly or laughing.
When Su Yan came back hugging the basin of walnuts, she heard a woman’s voice.
"Miss, slow down."
"Oh, it’s such a rare chance to see the Prince. Do you think he’ll like how I’m dressed?"
"Miss, you’re so beautiful. The Prince will definitely like it."
Su Yan hugged the walnuts and walked along the stone path toward the back garden.
Her expression was calm, barely changing.
She only noticed the voices behind her getting closer and closer.
Until, with a bang, someone bumped into Su Yan from behind.
Su Yan felt nothing much—no pain, no itch—and her walking pace didn’t even change.
But the person who had run into her, with that collision and a stumble on top of it—
Her footing slipped; she stepped on her own rose‑pink skirt, and with a rip—
Su Yan heard a startled cry behind her.
"Ah!!"
She stopped and turned around to look.
She saw a girl with sweet features and big, watery eyes, a gold hairpin and dangling ornaments in her hair, wearing a rose‑pink brocade dress painstakingly woven by an embroidery lady, sprawled on the ground.
The skirt had torn with that rip, ruining the hem.
The maid following behind the girl took one look and immediately tensed up.
"Miss, are you all right?"
The girl’s eyes instantly filled with tears.
"My skirt."
The maid Xiao Tao couldn’t swallow her anger; she stood up and pointed at Su Yan, shouting angrily,
"How do you walk?!"
Su Yan answered seriously,
"I walk normally."
The maid snapped,
"You!! You ran into our young miss and even ruined her skirt!
Do you know how much Silver this skirt cost?!
Even if we sold you, you couldn’t pay for it!!"
Su Yan listened, then after a brief silence said,
"She stepped on it herself. It wasn’t me."
The delicate young miss with reddened eyes got to her feet.
Anger colored her pretty face.
"You’re just a servant, and you still dare talk back?"
But as soon as the words left her mouth, Ning Zhi froze when she saw Su Yan’s face.
This face looked so familiar.
It was actually seventy percent similar to the current Empress.
The realization stunned Ning Zhi.
But she quickly snapped out of it.
The Empress would show up here?
Impossible.
It was just a coincidence—they happened to look alike.
Su Yan hugged the walnuts, completely earnest.
"I didn’t talk back."
She was simply telling the truth.
Ning Zhi was so angered by this clueless guard that she stamped her foot.
But this wasn’t her turf, after all.
The Prince’s guard—she didn’t quite dare lay hands on her herself.
Supported by her maid, Ning Zhi walked along the stone path ahead, carrying her irritation with her.
As she left, the maid let out a cold, mocking snort.
"Count yourself lucky—our young miss won’t hold it against you."
Soon, mistress and maid disappeared around the corner.
Su Yan hugged the walnuts and continued on toward the pavilion.
When she reached the pavilion, she again heard the voices of those two from just now.
"Prince."
